Day 4: Muncho Lake, British Columbia, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

Something told me to get up early that day because there was either going to be interesting sites along the way or there was going to be something special in Whitehorse. Both turned out to be correct. I left Mucho Lake around 5:30 a.m.

There were many mountain goats and bison on the road.

This part of the trip was pretty curvy with a lot of road construction and cracked pavement.

It rained the entire way.

I arrived in Whitehorse around 4 p.m. to my Airbnb home. I wish I would have stayed two nights but only reserved for one. The host was outside when I arrived. She and her family were very interesting, originally from Scotland and moved around the world ever since. She actually found herself studying black bear in Minnesota for a year then moved up to Canada. She had two young daughters and her husband worked hundreds to thousands of miles away every two weeks or so. They also had a live-in nanny, who was from New Zealand.

She offered me some tea and we sat and talked about various subjects for a long while before it was time for the family to go to horseback riding lessons.

I cooked dinner and talked to the nanny for the evening about traveling, New Zealand in general, and health problems. Ahh…health problems. This was why Whitehorse turned out to be interesting.

Our talk turned to healthcare and I explained the American healthcare system and once again it made a non-American person confused and sad when she heard how our system works.

I cannot remember how we happened upon the subject but she told me that she was going through a serious medical condition. From what she was telling me, I recognized the symptoms and I politely asked if it was “X,” and she said yes. I said, “Oh no.”

I proceeded to tell her what I went through and that I have had two surgeries due to these complications. She sounded like she was still in the early stages of this condition so I gave her some recommendations and even drew a diagram for her. “What are the odds of a meeting like this in Whitehorse, Yukon?” she asked. Something must have aligned in the universe so I could be there to warn her not to brush off her health condition any longer and to go to the doctor.
